American Sikh Gurdwara opens its doors for Thanksgiving meal

There are over one million Sikhs in America; they have started to take their place in American society.

Sikhism is the fifth world religion and prides its self of teachings of diversity and secularism, taking these doctrines a Gurdwara in Clover Road will join the festive season of Thanks Giving and offer Guru Ji’ s Lungar (free kitchen).

“This is a way for the (Sikh) community to say thanks to the city of Tracy and the community,” Sangha said, adding that she sent invitations to the police department, fire department and local hospital — “all the people who go out of their way to make our lives better, easier.”

There will be room for several hundred people in the temple parking lot, and the spread will be vegetarian.

“I think everybody’s going to be turkey-ed out by Saturday,” Sangha joked.

A wide variety of dishes will be available, many in an Indian style. But no chicken curry, Sangha added.

The temple hopes to make the event an annual celebration. But right now the focus is on throwing a post-Thanksgiving party that the temple, and the city of Tracy, can be proud of.

“It’s a way to get the community together,” Sangha said.
