Sikhs voice concerns for a pollution free environment

“May all be in high spirits by His Name and good be to all with His Will !” Guru Nanak Dev Ji said

In a passionate New Years message the honorable Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has appealed to the world to be vigilant to the environment and the consequences if man continues to abuse mother nature.

Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal said:

As you know very well, the sewage of towns and villages and toxic wastage of industries are being illegally thrown into Buddha Nallah, Chitti Bein, Kala Sanghia Drain, Tung Dhab, Ghaggar and other streams.

The polluted water of Buddha Nallah, Chitti Bein and Kala Sanghia Drain flows into Satluj and, from Hari-ke headworks, is supplied for drinking to the people of Malwa and Rajasthan, through Sarhind Canal and Rajasthan Canal.

Affected by this utterly contaminated water, people fall prey to deadly diseases like Cancer, Hepatitis, gastroenteritis,  and various circulatory, respiratory and skin diseases, and die slow and painful deaths in hospitals.

Having seeped into subsoil layers and polluted rich stores of ground water, these contaminated waters have also started causing fatal diseases like cancer and hepatitis leading people to death in Doaba area too. From time to time, you have been publicising reports about the dreadfulness of the situation.

By giving preferred importance to pollution of environment and natural water resources, you have made an invaluable contribution in preparing an atmosphere favourable for environmental conservation in political, social, environmental, intellectual and religious circles. In every election, may it be Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha or SGPC election, or in normal times, you have always highlighted problem of pollution of Punjab waters, for which you deserve a special vote of thanks.

It may be noted that the pollution of water resources is a gross violation of Water (Prohibition of Pollution) Act 1974, Constitution of India (Fundamental Rights) Section 21 and (Part IV-Directive Principles) Section 48-A, Canal & Drainage Act 1873, section 5 and other similar laws. Media can play a very significant role in protecting Constitution of India and restoring law and order.

It has become necessary to arouse and spiritually stir every section of society and make them realize that clean environment is not necessary for us alone but for our posterities too. Service rendered with pen and camera can become a part of history.
In 2007-Vidhan Sabha  and 2009-Lok Sabha elections, political parties were appealed to include environment as the chief election issue in their Election Manifestos and to form solid programs for its implementation, but not much improvement in the situation has occurred. So, once again, we appeal for environment to be made the chief election issue in forthcoming Vidhan Sabha elections.

To give a call to all political parties for including environment as the chief agenda in their Manifestos and implement it on the ground, and to make common people aware of it, conferences of all political parties, NGOs, religious people, environmentalists, intellectuals and masses will be organized at different places in Punjab before the elections. In this series, first major conference is going to be organized on 7/01/2012 at Gurdwara Tahli Sahib Baler Khanpur where discussions will be held on this important matter.

We heartily invite you to this important event and request you to kindly take personal interest  and send teams for the coverage of these conferences and widely publicise /telecast the reporting of these activities so that the attention of all the concerned parties and people could be drawn to this problem and its solution be speeded up.
